At the Viral Academy we started to use the term Learning Object for the Hangout Based Lessons we were experimenting with.
However the term has been used before, and appears to have developed a bad reputation. I assume that was because of poor and inflexible implementations coming out of computer science.
We use the term to describe a reusable, evolving chunk of knowledge, that encompasses many modalities, and can ideally be used in a range of different scenarios.
A Learning Object in this sense shares a number of properties with a wiki page. In particular it has the following properties:
