A Living Document is a text intended to evolve over time rather than remain static. Unlike conventional publications, a living document is updated as new information becomes available.
I cam across the use of this term first in the sceintific context through my interest in peer review reform and open science: - Living Reviews
I am interested in evolving this concept to embrace a future in which both generative ai, and rich media are integrated into the document format.
It is clear to me that it is possible to formally define this format in a type of computer mediated representation that serves the following essential functions. It should be a: 1. Deliberative Primitive 1. Record of Pubication 1. Personally Comprehensible
# Earlier Uses The phrase Living Document has also been used in legal and political theory, such as the idea of a Living Constitution, where constitutional meaning evolves over time.
In organizational and business contexts, the term predates the scientific usage but is less precisely documented. It generally referred to policies or manuals that were maintained as ongoing works.

# Later Developments
The idea of Living Document in science re-emerged in other contexts, such as proposals for evolving research articles. For example, a 2015 paper in *Trials* discussed "reincarnating the research article" as a living document.
